Copenhagen shooting: Suspect remanded for 24 days in psychiatric ward | Media Pyro

Copenhagen police confirmed on Monday that a court had remanded the main suspect in the attack to a closed psychiatric ward, adding that he would be held in custody for at least 24 days and could be extended.

He was brought before a judge at the Copenhagen District Court on Monday afternoon.

The gunman had tried to reach a psychological helpline shortly before the attack, but authorities have not confirmed this, according to public broadcaster DR, citing several unnamed sources.

The attack comes as the city hosts the start of the Tour de France cycling race and sees the Roskilde music festival return after being canceled due to Covid restrictions.

A shooting at a shopping mall in Copenhagen left three people dead and three others in critical condition on Sunday.

Copenhagen police inspector Søren Thomassen said the three victims were in their 40s and “two young men”.

A Danish man opened fire inside a busy shopping mall in the Danish capital on Sunday, killing several people and wounding several others, police said.

The man was arrested, and Copenhagen police inspector Søren Thomassen told reporters there was no indication that anyone else was involved in the attack, although police were still investigating.

Thomassen said it was too early to speculate on a motive for the shooting at Fields, one of Scandinavia’s largest shopping malls, on the outskirts of the Danish capital, just after noon. Witnesses said some people hid in shops while others fled in a panicked stampede when gunshots rang out.

Danish broadcaster TV2 published a photo of the alleged gunman wearing knee-length shorts and a tank top with what appeared to be a rifle in his right hand.

Images from the scene showed people running out of the mall, and TV2 posted a photo of a man being carried on a stretcher. After the shooting, a large contingent of heavily armed police officers patrolled the area and several fire engines were parked outside the mall.

The shopping center is on the outskirts of Copenhagen, opposite a subway station on a line connecting the city center to the international airport. A major highway also passes adjacent to the mall.

Organizers canceled a Harry Styles concert scheduled at the nearby Royal Arena on police orders.

The attack rocked Denmark at the end of a joyous week, just after hosting the first three stages of the Tour de France cycle race. The event brought hundreds of thousands of Danes to the streets across the country.
