GUWAHATI: Inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, the Congress on Tuesday started the Yatra in Assam from the borders of Golakganj in Dhubri district near the Bangladesh border to the eastern tip of Sadiya on the border of Arunachal Pradesh.
The trek will cover 834 km in 13 districts of Brahmaputra valley in 70 days. AICC general secretary and Assam party chief, Jitendra Singh, and state PCC chief Bhupen Borah inaugurated the yatra in the presence of a large number of senior party leaders. Hundreds of Congress workers and leaders joined the party’s mass networking program in Dhubri.
The Congress is looking to revive its base of support ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and next year’s rural elections in the state where it ruled for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2016. Congress leaders have attacked I took the BJP and Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF, accusing them of engaging in anti-Semitism politics. “There is great enthusiasm among the people. It is a campaign by the people of Assam who feel betrayed by the mismanagement of the BJP,” Singh said.
Ajmal, who represents Dhubri in the Lok Sabha and has caused massive erosion in the Congress vote bank in minority districts like Dhubri, in the past decade, was his target. He said that Ajmal had deceived the people of Dhubri and accused them of ‘sold votes’ and bought ‘green’ (perfume is made with agarwood). “Ajmal is working as an agent of the BJP,” Singh said.
He accused the BJP of dividing Assam on tribal, religious and regional lines. “People’s frustration against the ruling BJP will unite Assam,” Singh added.
Borah said that 13 senior party leaders will lead the yatra in Assam. He said that starting from the economy, health, agriculture and education, the region is in chaos, although the party wants people to believe otherwise. “The BJP has started trading on religion to cover up the failures of their government,” he said.
While the BJP has taken a dig at the Congress for choosing minority districts to start the yatra to appease the minorities, Borah said the Congress leaders started the yatra after offering prayers at the Mahamaya temple. and the Vaishnavite monastery Ramrai Kuthi Satra. Congress MP from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, has pledged Rs 25 lakh to his MP’s fund for satra development.
The yatra will pass through Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup, Guwahati, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh before ending at Sadiya in Tinsukia district of eastern Assam.
