NEW DELHI: Terming the current structure of the legal profession as “feudal” and “patriarchal”, CJI DY Chandrachud on Saturday slammed it for laying blocks for the future by giving women a chance in the law firm. CJI Chandrachud was speaking at the HT Leadership Conference in New Delhi.
“The Court has a source of food, and in the case of the Supreme Court, there are high courts and lawyers from the party. For HC, the source of power is the district judge or the lawyers who practice before the SC. What has happened is that the feeding pool that determines who enters our judiciary depends largely on the constitution of the legal profession. The structure of the legal profession today is feudal, patriarchal, and has not accommodated women. So when we talk about the need for women to enter the judiciary, it is our duty to set the agenda for the future by giving women a chance now in the legal profession. He added that to address the high number of cases, the need of the hour is to fill up the vacancies in the courts.
