A man who shot and killed a man at a Burger King in Frederick, Maryland last December was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Darrin Tyler Roby, 21, was sentenced Friday after a jury found him guilty over the summer, the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Officials say that on December 26, 2021, Robbie entered the fast food restaurant to confront his girlfriend, who worked at the restaurant. 21-year-old Jayon Penamon witnessed the confrontation and tried to intervene when Roby was shot twice in the chest.

Penamon died at the scene. Robbie escaped and was later arrested.

At sentencing, State’s Attorney Charlie Smith argued for the maximum sentence allowed, saying “the most heinous second-degree murders deserve the harshest sentences.”

“From the moment he pulled the trigger to the moment he stepped over Jayon’s dying body and casually walked away, Robbie was remorseless,” Smith said.

The court rooms and some parts of the court were locked after a fight broke out in the court room between the families of the victim and the accused.
