BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — Three people have been arrested in connection with a shooting that left a woman dead in northeast Boulder County, 9NEWS reports.
On Sunday, around 12:15 a.m., a Larimer County deputy attempted to pull over a driver on suspicion of DUI, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. The driver refused to stop and headed south onto Highway 287 near Highway 56, where the deputy decided to stop pursuing the driver, deputies said.
Later, a car was found disabled at Highway 297 and Yellowstone Road, deputies said. Several people were seen running away from the car.
Deputies said the shot victim and her mother believed they saw the car when it stopped near Highway 287 and Yellowstone Road. After the suspects left the disabled car, one of them fired at the women’s car with a handgun, hitting her daughter in the passenger seat.
A 21-year-old woman from Denver died at the hospital.
Police believe the suspects opened fire while attempting to carjack the victims. The police said that the accused and the victim did not know each other.
The suspects were found in a camper parked on a residential property near where the car was abandoned, police said. Police have arrested two people in connection with the shooting.
Martin Cerda, 23, of the Greeley area, was arrested and charged with:
- Second degree murder
- Attempted robbery
- The vehicle moves away
- Possession of a weapon by an ex-convict
Adriana Vargas, 24, of the Greeley area, was arrested and charged with:
- Second degree murder
- Possession of a weapon by an ex-convict
- Several arrest warrants unrelated to the shooting
A third suspect was arrested on separate warrants out of Weld County, deputies said.
