Suspended Superintendent of Police Raj Mohan Ray was arrested on Thursday after allegedly accepting Rs 2 lakh as bribe from the relatives of a man accused of raping and murdering a girl in Assam’s Darrang district, a CID statement said. .

The SP was arrested after evidence was collected, the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said.

Ray took illegal gratification from the relatives of the accused in the girl’s murder case and offered them undue favors to solve the case, she said.

He was arrested in a fresh case registered by Assam CID under Prevention of Corruption Act and IPC sections, the statement said.

After analysis of bank accounts, call details records and tower sites, CID investigators found that Ray had received Rs 2 lakh from the accused’s family, she said.

A 13-year-old domestic help girl was allegedly raped and killed in June, and an FIR was lodged at the Dhula police station.

The incident sparked outrage, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the girl’s family on August 12 following allegations that the police had failed in their duty to gather evidence.
