Silchar: Reporter Silchar Biswa Kalyan Purkayasta Security forces beat him with sticks when the former went to Silchar Medical College to deliver food to his sister-in-law who was admitted to the maternity ward of SMCH on Saturday night.
The house guards were stationed outside the delivery room for allegedly misbehaving, taunting and later assaulting Purakayastha.
Biswakalyan is a popular journalist from Silchar, associated with Hindustan Times and a local Bengali daily. The attack on the reporter upset many people.
With bruises on his hands and back, Purkayastha was rushed to the civil hospital for treatment on Saturday night. Cachar police chief immediately reached the spot and fired the accused house guard.
Expressing his thoughts on Facebook after the incident, Purakayastha wrote “….A man in khaki misbehaved with me and politely asked him not to do that. He asked me what I do, and I said I work for a newspaper. Another janitor scoffed at him, which I ignored. I asked him to call any reporter, he knows and ask me if I am wrong. But suddenly the house guard named S Deb started hitting me with a stick.
He informed that he has taken the matter to the Director of SMCH Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah who suggested that he file a formal complaint.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta who spoke to the media expressed hope in this incident and assured that legal action will be taken.

“The safety and security of media workers is also a priority of the government. The Deputy Minister has directed for a crime-free state where everyone can maintain safety and security with dignity. The matter will be looked into,” the SP said. .
The FIR was filed by journalist Biswa Kalyan Purkaystha at Silchar Sadar police station.
