Guwahati (Assam) [India]November 9 (ANI): Assam has acquired a cold storage unit of 5,000 tonnes at Chaygaon which is the largest in the state, along with a processing facility at Satabari food farm under Kamrup district.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the two projects on Tuesday, an official statement from the Chief Minister’s office said.
The 5,000-metric-tonne cold storage facility has been constructed by the Assam State Agriculture Marketing Board at a cost of Rs 24.75 crore.
The air conditioning and refrigeration units of this facility are likely to benefit the farmers of Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Goalpara, Nalbari and Barpeta districts.
“Although the ‘refrigerator’ rooms are designed to store agricultural products such as potatoes, fruits and other vegetables, the ‘freezer’ room would be used to store milk and milk products,” the statement said.
The fruit processing unit was constructed at a cost of Rs 2.89 crore.
Addressing a public meeting at Chaygaon College Stadium, Minister Sarma asked the youth of the region to focus on processing and packaging agricultural produce and materials.

Also, the Prime Minister said that the products of the region such as ginger, pepper, lemon, and Joha rice were in great demand in the domestic and foreign markets, saying that the farmers of these products should get a monetary value only if the longer the production. processed and packaged, which will contribute to value addition.
This, he said, will have a positive impact on the ongoing process of strengthening the regional economy, he added.

Referring to the initiatives of the state government, annual export of plant produce has reached Rs 200 crore in the last two years and the Prime Minister expressed confidence that in the coming days this figure will easily increase. can exceed Rs 1,000. .
Moreover, he asked the Department of Agriculture to take the necessary steps in this regard.
Saying that the state’s economy is still very dependent on agriculture, the Prime Minister talked about the initiatives to modernize agriculture, expand the marketing of agricultural products and attract young people to agriculture and other issues.
