The Assam government on Tuesday said it will cancel 8,000 vacant posts of official school teachers as a large number of contractual members are already working under the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA).
The opposition parties and student organizations have strongly attacked the government, claiming that this move is against the interests of middle schools.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that the state government in 2020 has offered regular salary and other benefits such as service up to 60 years to 11,206 contract teachers working under SSA in primary and secondary schools.

“In order to maintain rationality against the imminent regulation, the Govt. has decided to vacate 8000 sanctioned posts of regular teachers to avoid duplication and fiscal neutrality,” he said in a statement. posted on Facebook.
The Minister of Education said that since these vacancies have been frozen and will remain vacant for a long time until the retirement of contract teachers, the government has deemed it prudent to abolish them in terms of financial discipline.
However, he said the state government may create positions as and when required due to the increase in enrollment in the future.
Reacting to the announcement, Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi alleged that the move to abolish the posts was “short-sighted” against the public education system.

“Such schemes by the government against foreign-language secondary schools are ancient, and the latest is the elimination of thousands of teachers’ positions, such a decision related to education, which is a constitutional issue. Ah, it’s not acceptable at all,” he said. .
All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) general secretary Aminul Islam said that instead of giving jobs to the unemployed youth, the government has eliminated thousands of opportunities.
“This move is really unfortunate at a time when one teacher is teaching 4,000 schools in the state. To maintain the teacher-student ratio as per the NEP, more staff are needed,” he added.
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah has said that the BJP-led government in Assam is planning to “finish off” the medium institutions in the state.
“This will destroy all the government schools that speak Assamese, Bodo and other local languages. There are around 500 middle schools where there are no teachers at all. We are asking the government to that she quickly reverses the decision,” added Baruah.
After opposition reactions began to pour in, Pegu called an “urgent press conference” on the topic on Wednesday.
On Monday, School Education Secretary Bijoya Choudhury wrote to the Accountant General of Assam informing the officer of the decision to cancel the vacant posts of regular teachers.
She said in her letter that 4,285 of the positions are in primary/middle schools while the remaining 3,715 are in primary schools.
