JACKSONVILLE, NC (WITN) – An armed confrontation led to a fatal officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville Tuesday, police said.
Chief Mike Yaniro said that just before 5:00 p.m., officers saw other vehicles passing in the center turn lane of Western Boulevard, making a U-turn in front of oncoming traffic.
Officers then activated their lights and siren to try to stop the vehicle, the chief said. After a short investigation, the vehicle crashed on White Street.
Yaniro said an armed confrontation took place a short distance from the car and an officer fired at one of the occupants of the vehicle.
He later died at Camp Lejeune Naval Medical Center, the chief said.
He said a gun was recovered from the scene and an officer is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an SBI investigation into the fatal shooting.
Yaniro would not release the names of those involved and would not say whether the deceased was armed.
“Again, this is a matter for the SBI and I cannot answer those questions until they complete their investigation,” the chief said.
