In a statement issued on Tuesday, Assam CID said that Phukan received Rs. 1.5 lakh in bribes received from relatives of the accused through Bora. “He failed to perform his legal duty as an additional SP in charge of district crime and tried to look into the accused who killed and raped the girl,” the statement said.

The CID on Monday arrested three doctors namely Arun Chandra Deka, Ajanta Bordoloi and Anupam Sharma, who conducted the first post-mortem of the victim’s body at Mangaldoi Civil Hospital in Darrang. “The investigation found that there were several commissions made by these doctors when they did the first autopsy, they clearly wrote that there were no signs other than the ligaments. These were clearly removed by the second autopsy. done by GMCH,” the statement said.

The CID said that the second post-mortem examination concluded that the injuries were invisible and caused by a forceful impact. “Furthermore, the board of forensic experts clearly concluded that the injuries were caused by a blunt weapon and the death was caused by strangulation and not suicide.” No video was taken and proper procedure was not followed during the autopsy, she added. “The doctors clearly conspired to justify the lack of evidence with the aim of investigating the culprit and also to make a false report (first report of death) to save the accused from punishment.

The doctors are being questioned for further investigation, the CID said.
