Think about your first gaming laptop? The Nitro 5 is the easy choice. Yes, there are brighter options available, figuratively and literally, but Acer’s budget gaming machine is as reliable as they come. It’s not much to look at, but, glass half full, that means it’s also inoffensive.
The whole gaming package is better than the price you pay – from plenty of horsepower to a very good keyboard. There are some sacrifices, but you can’t expect perfection at this price. If you’re a gaming laptop newbie or just someone interested in this portable form factor that doesn’t want to wear the Earth, you can’t ignore the Nitro 5.

The Acer Nitro 5 not only delivers what you’d expect from the spec, it often pushes beyond that – a coup for a low-cost machine. My review sample configuration had an Intel Core i5-12500H graphics card, 16 GB RAM, a 512-GB SSD, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050Ti. The results were really impressive when we put it up against main competitors HP, Dell, and Asus. Acer closely matched competitors across the performance spectrum, outperformed competitors with matching specs, and even sometimes outperformed laptops with higher specs.
What you get with the Nitro 5 is a 1080p 60fps machine at around Low to Medium settings for titles that focus on graphical fidelity Borderlands 3 and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. The laptop can even push it to around 90 fps, but you’ll get consistent performance closer to 60. For those craving frames per second, the 144-Hz display can be maxed out on 1080p Low settings entitled as Legends of Apex.

This laptop also performs in the noise department, where many gaming laptops can often be dismissed. The dual fan and quad exhaust stop this device from ever getting uncomfortably hot, and, unless the fans are turned up manually, they don’t get noticeably loud.
Unsurprisingly at this price the screen isn’t the brightest or most colorful. Such features are reserved for high-end gaming machines or devices that don’t prioritize gaming (or frames per second) at all. However, it gets bright enough for an average-lit room, and the colors are reasonably accurate.
When playing titles with a realistic design, you may miss a little environmental detail, but other than that, you will have few complaints with the theaters when running your game. You’re stuck with a 16:9 panel, which is perfectly fine for gaming, watching videos, and the like, but, in 2022, many in this category are also opting for 16:10 – recognizing the need to accommodate on improved productivity as well. . But, this is no Acer.
Keyboard performance is strong, especially given the reasonable price of this machine. It offers tons of travel and a pleasant, if minimal, level of feedback. Devices like the HP Victus 16 and Dell G15 prefer the keystroke, but if you want something with more tactile feedback, the Asus TUF laptop would be the way to go. You would be sacrificing travel, though.
