Lexington, Ky. (WSAZ) – A Floyd County deputy who was injured during a June 30 shooting in Allen, Kentucky, underwent surgery Monday to have his leg amputated below the knee.
Deputy Darin Lawson’s fiance, Madison Nunnery, posted on Facebook that she was amputated six inches below the knee joint.
“This decision was not taken lightly, and ultimately, this is where we are. He had an amputation yesterday, and after another hospital stay, rehab stay and physical therapy appointments, he will soon begin working with the prosthetic teams,” the post read.
Lawson did an interview with WSAZ in late July after his eighth leg surgery. In that interview, he said there was still a chance he could lose his leg.
In the post, the nun asked for prayers for the family as they navigate this new way of life, especially for their youngest daughter.
“We could never have imagined that our lives would change forever because of the act of one evil person on that fateful evening in June. But we are strong and Darin is resilient. Our community has supported us endlessly, even in their own time of grief, for which we are forever grateful,” Nunnery wrote.
They said they will continue to fix defects in their home and stay strong.
“I will never understand why this happened, and although I can ask the question again and again, I can find comfort in knowing that we have support. “While this is not the outcome we hoped for during these challenging months, Darrin is still with us to tell his story, and that alone is enough to keep us going,” Nunnery said.
Lawson was released from the hospital Wednesday.
