Chicago (WLS) — There are new details on Friday’s attempted robbery and fatal shooting in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood.
A relative of the victim who was shot at the family grocery store spoke to ABC7.
Investigators said two people, including the perpetrator, were killed as the attempted robbery quickly turned deadly, leaving nothing but destruction.
“My uncle Ali, I look up to him as a role model and a standup human being. He’s one of the reasons I’m who I am today,” said Khalid Hassan, the victim’s nephew.
A nephew of Ali Hasan remembers his beloved uncle fondly hours after the 63-year-old grocery store owner was shot and killed during an attempted robbery near 73rd Street and Coles Avenue.
“He’s the most standup guy, caring guy. He listened,” Khaled said. “If you were around him, he always had good energy, always a positive person.”
A bouquet of flowers was left at the door of a grocery store to express the grief of a family and neighbors.
“Honestly I just saw him yesterday. It’s very unfortunate to hear what happened,” said neighbor Louise Perry.
A husband and father were killed Friday night in a shooting inside the family’s South Shore grocery store, the Chicago Police Department said.
Neighborhood resident and stylist Tashira Jones was getting a customer’s hair done when her security camera captured the moment gunfire erupted.
“I just heard the gunshots, so I asked her, ‘Did you hear that?’ She was like yes, so we got on the floor,” Jones recalled.
Investigators said it came to light after the 24-year-old robber entered the store around 6:30 Friday night, pulled out a gun and attempted to rob the business.
That’s when Hassan’s relatives say one of two other male family members working at the store, who had a valid gun owner’s ID card and concealed carry license, pulled out his own weapon and shot the armed robber, who shot Ali.
“When he came home from the police department and he and my cousin were there, he just broke down, I’ve never seen him like that,” Khalid said.
Witnesses said the would-be robber ran from the store but collapsed and died on the sidewalk a block away.
Ali was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, but his life could not be saved.
On Saturday afternoon, as relatives and friends gathered to support each other at the family’s west suburban home, Khalid remembered his uncle as the man he hoped would one day be.
“My life’s mission is everything I do is going to go back to him,” Khalid said.
Another person in the store was not injured. Police said three guns were recovered from the scene. Two weapons involved in the shooting and another gun behind a store counter. The shooting is still under investigation.
