The mother of a 13-year-old boy shot to death in his backyard in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, is asking for the public’s help in finding who killed her son.
Eighth-grader Jayce Agnew was seriously injured in the Nov. 8 shooting in the 2100 block of Jameson Street at 5:20 p.m., Prince George’s County police said. He was raking leaves and his father was working in the yard with him minutes before it happened.
“His dad was gone, he said, maybe five minutes. “He ran outside when he heard the gunshot and then he saw Jace on the ground,” said the teenager’s mother, Juanita Agnew.
He died on Friday.
Juanita Agnew said Jayce was an easy-going kid who never got into trouble.
“I would call him goofy and funny. “Very, very calm and relaxed, nothing taken too seriously,” she said.
No one has been arrested in the case and the police have not given any possibility.
Family members are worried about their safety.
“We are not living in our residence because I am afraid. I’m afraid to go back to my house and I don’t want to relive it every moment. So it’s very difficult for us,” said Juanita Agnew.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page for expenses. They want to bring awareness to gun violence and make sure Jayce’s murder doesn’t become a cold case.
“My fear is that… tomorrow or next week, we’ll stop talking about it. We still have to live with that loss,” said Juanita Anyu. “Whoever did it walks free, and it shouldn’t.”
She is asking anyone with video that could help the investigation to come forward.
