Kuttoun University said police are investigating after receiving a report of someone brandishing a weapon near the campus entrance. It comes a day after an 18-year-old man was shot and killed during a party at a nearby apartment building.
At 3:30 a.m. Sunday, the Kuttown University Department of Public Safety and Police Services issued an alert for a report of a man brandishing a weapon, they said. She said it happened at College Boulevard and West Main Street.
According to the alert, the man was a passenger in a dark-colored sedan with dark-colored rims. Officials said the vehicle is believed to have fled the scene. It comes shortly after police say 18-year-old Diego Velazquez of Reading was fatally shot inside Advantage Point student apartments near the university early Saturday morning. State police said the shooting occurred during an argument at a party.
Officials said he was dead on arrival at the hospital. The university said he was not a Kuttown student.
Alex Lyons told 69 News he was on the fifth floor of the building when everything opened up.
“It’s horrible, I was completely shocked when I heard the gunshots, you don’t expect that to happen here. I’ve been going here for three years and nothing like that has ever happened,” Lyons said.
A warning issued by the university said the attackers are believed to have left the area. The university said resources are available to students, including psychological services and counseling.
69 News reached the apartment building but did not hear back. There’s no word on any arrests stemming from the two incidents, and no word on whether they’re related. Police have not identified a motive for Saturday’s shooting.
