Assam on Thursday asked Mizoram to provide details of the villages, including their locations and the ethnicity of the residents, to support the claims of the areas now in the state’s northeastern mainland.

Claims must be submitted within a period of three months and then will be taken up by regional committees established by the two governments to find a consensus solution to the border dispute between the states.

The decision was taken during a meeting between Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora and Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana in Guwahati during the day.

A joint statement issued by the two governments said that Mizoram will display the list of villages, their habitations, extent of agricultural land, ethnic origin of the inhabitants and other important details for a period of three years. within months to support their claim to the existing lands in the region. of Assam.

These claims will be reviewed by regional committees on both sides.

Both governments have agreed to maintain the status quo and continue to ensure peace and harmony in the border regions.

The delegation of Mizoram has informed their counterparts in Assam that there is a crisis in the groundnut farmers in the mountainous region as they are facing problems with the vehicles they used to transport to Assam and other regions of the country.

Due to the illegal smuggling of nuts from neighboring countries, there are strict checks at state borders, and shipments are seized if the transporters do not have all the necessary documents.

Both governments agreed to refer the matter to their respective administrations for a neutral solution.

The two governments also agreed to continue their tolerance for the transportation of groundnuts from other countries.

Assam shares a border of 164.6 km with Mizoram.

The long-standing boundary dispute has its origins in an 1875 notification issued during the British era that separated the Lushai Hills from the Cachar plains, and another in 1933 that demarcated the boundary between the Lushai Hills and Manipur.

Mizoram maintains that the boundaries of the states should be demarcated based on the notification of 1875, which is related to the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) Act, 1873.

Mizoram leaders have challenged the delimitation notification of 1933, claiming that the Mizo community was not consulted, while Assam wants the notification to be enforced.

In one of the bloodiest clashes between the two states, six Assam Police constables and one civilian were killed in a shootout between the security forces of the neighboring states along the state border in July last year.

Several rounds of peace talks have been going on since then for the administrations of the two regions in the North East.
