Mounties appear to have shot and killed a woman in North Vancouver, prompting an investigation by B.C.’s police watchdog.
According to a media release from the North Vancouver RCMP, officers were called at 7:30 p.m. to a report of “a female allegedly attempting to assault another person with a weapon.”
Police say they received a second complaint of a woman trying to break into their home.
“Information received from both complainants led police to believe that the acts were committed by the same woman,” the statement from the detachment continued.
“Officers were able to locate the female and initial attempts to take the female into custody were unsuccessful. A confrontation resulted in an officer discharging their service-discharged firearm.”
A spokesman confirmed on Sunday that the Independent Investigations Office had been called in to investigate the incident. The fatal incident, described as a “fatal officer-involved shooting,” unfolded in the 3700 block of Humber Place, according to a statement from the IIO.
“Police opened fire shortly before 7:45 p.m.,” the police watchdog said in a statement.
“Emergency health services attended and the woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.”
