BELL, Fla. (WCJB) – Residents of Bell are responding to a shooting in broad daylight. Shots rang out on NW 52nd Street around 2 a.m. Friday.
“We heard two quick shots,” said Michael Kern, who lives next door to the home where the shooting happened. “We looked out the window behind us and we could see people running. We could see a child running across the field screaming.
Gilchrist County Sheriff’s deputies say a woman is suspected of shooting a man during a domestic incident.
“I thought it was a hunting situation, somebody was hunting a deer or something, but the gunshot was so close to our house,” Kern said.
He believes a custody battle prompted the woman to shoot the child’s father.
“I hope he survives this mess and I hope he gets some justice,” Kern said.
However, TV20 spoke to other neighbors who say they believe the woman confronted her child’s father about possible abuse.
“He’s going to do his usual thing of grabbing her by the throat, and I think he took her down, which he usually does…the mom put the pistol in her jacket and shot him,” said neighbor Kent Dubose.
Dubose said, “This is the story I got from the various people involved.”
DuBuose, a retired law enforcement officer, said he believes this is not a case of a mother getting angry over custody issues.
“What I saw would set her free in an instant. It was self-defense,” he said. “You don’t have to beat a man every time you see him, and then convince people that he’s done something.”
TV20 spoke with several residents who want sheriff’s officials to be more transparent about the incident, but a GCSO spokesperson said it’s currently an ongoing investigation.
Deputies said the shooting victim is expected to recover.
No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
